Make 2018 THE year for job success

Beginning this month, Suited for Success / Dress for Success Miami is launching monthly job readiness workshops for community members looking to jump-start their job search. The two-hour workshop will give participants an overview of job interview etiquette and tips, professional image, and resumes.

Workshop attendees will also learn more about the other services available through Suited for Success and Dress for Success Miami, such as the Career Center, professional attire for job interviews, and week-long training programs.

Our next workshop will be held on Monday, Feb. 26, at the Overtown Business Resource Center. Interested participants should be job-ready, actively seeking employment, and currently unemployed or underemployed. Pre-registration is required and space is limited. Contact Tranell Harris at 305-444-1944 ext. 304 to register.

Bacardi volunteers lend a helping hand [Video]

This summer, Bacardi volunteers donated their time to help our Vets for Success participants with their resumes and other digital job search training. Hear some of their stories above.

Veterans get a leg up toward success

Veterans get a leg up toward success

This June, we graduated 17 veterans from the first cohort of our Vets for Success Employment Skills Training Program. The new program provides educational and vocational opportunities and life skills training, preparing individuals to secure and retain gainful employment and achieve economic self-sufficiency.

In preparation for the program, participants received one-on-one resume help, generously offered by volunteers from Bacardi. The program included Suited for Success’s signature employment skills training curriculum, as well as advanced customer service training applicable to any industry. The program was capped off by presentations and mock interview practice with local employers Walmart and Capital One. All 17 program graduates received certificates and interview suits from Suited for Success, as well as ongoing support through our Career Center with their resumes and online job search and application process.

The response from attendees was unanimously positive. In post-program evaluations, clients reported increased confidence in their job search and enhanced skill sets in the areas of job searching and interviewing. All clients expressed that they would recommend this program to other veterans.

“The training was very helpful,” reported one veteran. “Retraining of this information brings confidence that we (vets) can get employed.”

Another cohort of Vets for Success was held in August, with 14 veterans completing the program. The next cohort will be Nov. 6-9, 2017, at the Culmer Community Center in Overtown. The program is open to military veterans and family members who are unemployed or underemployed and actively job seeking. Interested participants, case managers, and corporate partnership representatives should contact Jeff Wahl at jwahl@suitedforsuccess.org.

Vets for Success is supported by Walmart, the Norman Braman Philanthropic Fund, Capital One, Judith and Norman Fields Family Fund, Micky and Madeleine Arison Family Foundation, Ocean Bank, Amazon, TD Charitable Foundation, AmTrust Bank, and Publix Super Market Charities.

Job-seeking veterans get a job search jump start with Suited for Success

Job-seeking veterans get a job search jump start with Suited for Success

Helping clients look appropriate for a job interview is just one part of what Suited for Success does. The other: preparing clients for the interview itself. Over the course of six weeks this spring, Suited for Success Executive Director Sonia Jacobson held an employment skills training program for veterans living at the Harding Village facility owned by Carrefour Supportive Housing.Over the course of the program, the veterans learned how to create a proper resume, how to answer questions on a job interview, and even experienced a mock interview to help them practice their new skills.

“The outcome and the program itself helped the veterans tremendously. It gave them confidence and showed them what to do in order to get employed,” says Gabriel Reyes, client services coordinator at Carrfour.

In addition to learning new skills, the veterans were treated to makeovers, courtesy of renowned hair stylist Javier Fonseca, a Suited for Success supporter.

Army Veteran and client, Philip Ortiz, thriving in his new job

Army Veteran and client, Philip Ortiz, thriving in his new job

A common misconception among employers is that the skills learned in the military cannot be applied in the civilian work force. But U.S. Army veteran Philip Ortiz proves otherwise. His service from 1999 to 2003 was not only beneficial to him for personal reasons, but also for career-related ones.

When he originally got his current job, he did not think the skills he learned while deployed would be useful, but he draws on his military    experience daily in his interactions with hotel guests and colleagues. His current position as night auditor at the Hyatt Regency in Coral Gables brings together several of the skills he learned in the military — paying attention to detail, taking initiative, handling pressure — all so he can successfully do bookkeeping work and interact with hotel guests in order to meet their needs.

Another important aspect of his job is the first impression he makes on clients as they check into the hotel. He thanks Suited for Success for giving him the tools necessary to help him do his job.

“In terms of dress code, I have to look my best,” says Ortiz. “Suited for Success gave me nice clothes for the job interview. When I went a second time, they were able to supply me with the outfits I could wear throughout the week since I wear a suit and tie to work everyday.”
